Halloween is a very fun and exciting holiday. And when it comes once again this year. I will  explore the history of this holiday. Halloween is a Celtic holiday. Observed by Ireland. Around 2000 years ago. And was called Samhain. It was a day where people would dress up in costume, have bonfires, and scare ghosts away. Since the belief that on this day the world between the dead and the living was thinner. And ghosts of your relatives can visit you on this night. This day is celebrated mostly by Wiccans (witches). It is the belief that the Oak King dies on this day. Leaving the last harvest season coming to end.

“By 43 A.D., the Roman Empire had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the 400 years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.”

“The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple, and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of bobbing for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.”

In the era 1000 A.D. Christians were spreading through Ireland. And renamed this day Hallows Eve. And eventually renamed again to Halloween.

Somehow Halloween and its celebrations migrated to America. Halloween was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. And was commercialized. It was a way for Christians who could change it to there way of teaching. And became a fun way for kids to go door to door for candy. And dress up in costume. When more Irish immigrants came to America it became nationwide.  Now it has became a Holiday to this present day.

Hope you enjoyed this post. Now you know where, and why we celebrate Halloween to this day.  Enjoy!
